As 2009 comes to an end and the technology industry looks ahead to 2010, it's Chrome OS that could arguably steal the show in the new year. It will be the first desktop operating system Google has ever released. It will also be released with one goal in mind: to beat Windows 7 wherever and whenever it can.

That's a tall order, for sure. Microsoft reigns supreme in the operating-system space. Windows 7, unlike its predecessor Windows Vista, has an opportunity to solidify Microsoft's position in the market with an experience that bests other operating systems on the market. So as Google prepares its Chrome OS for the market, it can't make any mistakes. The more mistakes the company makes, the more difficult it will be for Google to compete. Simply put, Microsoft has applied pressure that will dictate Google's moves going forward.

However, Google has already made mistakes. The search giant is focused on the wrong things. And it could come back to haunt it. Let's take a look at some of the mistakes Google has made.

Last time I tried Chrome I praised it for it's responsiveness, but decided not to use it for the lack of a plugin engine (extensions).

Now I have Xmarks and ADBlock working on it, there really isn't much of a reason to go back to Firefox.

It is amazing just how responsive Chrome is, when working in multiple tabs, compared to Firefox. The Mozilla Devs have some serious catching up to do when it comes to performance (need to divide the various tasks into independent threads, so they don't hinder each other).

I give if 4 out 5 because even for a Beta it is very usable. Of course there is always room for improvement, so keep it up and surprise me with more innovations!

Google introduced the bookmark sync feature for the developer-preview version in August, but now it's also in the better-tested beta version, Chrome 4.0.223.16. However, there's still no Chrome beta for Mac OS X or Linux.

In a video explanation, Google's Anthony LaForge somewhat breathlessly describes how the sync feature can keep bookmarks the same on multiple machines. That's a fair point, but let's be realistic here--bookmark sync in Chrome is more catch-up than paradigm shift. Indeed, with the popular Xmarks extension--in the works for Chrome, people can synchronize bookmarks among multiple browsers, not merely multiple computers.

And Chrome's clever message-based sync technology notwithstanding, Chrome bookmarks would be a lot more magical if they synchronized with the Google bookmarks service, which is linked with iGoogle and the Google Toolbar.

Google is still working on the Linux version of Google Chrome web browser, but as of now it is not yet released. Google's Chrome Linux page currently offers to notify you by email when it will be ready.

However, you can run Chrome on Linux already, the development version code named "Chromium", and Linux.com has a guide for how to install it here, at least on Ubuntu and Fedora Get Your Chrome Experience On Linux

Ubuntu users have it easiest. Just download the .deb package for your processor here and double click it to install (you don't need to do it via command line like the article says):
